Thanks again to Gordon Lewis for his excellent and engaging presentation at our last meeting. Following are Gordon’s 10 Rules for using storytelling techniques to engage learners. Additional information can be found in his PowerPoint slides.

  1. Know your audience
  2. Appeal to the emotions
  3. Show, don’t tell
  4. Know what’s at stake
  5. Plot flows from premise
  6. Open with tension
  7. Keep it moving
  8. Up the ante
  9. Highlight the turning point
  10. End with tension resolved

Thanks to Claire Boger and everyone who attended our last meeting. It was our most interactive meeting yet. Following Claire’s presentation, some very brave volunteers offered to show their e-learning courses to the group to get Claire’s opinion on their design, and several audience members also offered suggestions as well. We plan to use this critique format for future meetings, so have your samples ready—you can get advice that would normally cost you thousands of dollars absolutely free!

Click here to download the slides from Claire’s presentation, and don’t forget to follow the 4 principles of design: Contrast, Rhythm, Alignment, and Proximity, so your designs won’t look like…well you can figure it out.
